Alexandria may seem like an odd place to rent a hotel, but it is close to the Metro system and National Airport (two Metro stops away) and its rustic feel will give you an experience different from most visitors. Two hotels in the area are the Hilton Alexandria in Old Town and Relais & Chateaux Morrison House.

Dupont Circle (Red Line) has a little of everything. If you like to read, you can spend hours in Kramerbooks ( 1517 Connecticut Avenue, NW ). They have an excellent selection of books and an eatery in the back in case you get hungry. Nearby, you can roam for that used book that you haven't been able to find at Second Story Books and Antiques ( 2000 P Street, NW ).

Connecticut Avenue , the main road that runs through Dupont Circle , is lined with interesting shops. One of the unique women's clothing stores in the area is Betsy Fisher ( 1224 Connecticut Ave. NW ). The store stands out with its unique selection of clothing for women of all ages. And if you want to try a consignment shop, Secondi's ( 1702 Connecticut Ave. NW ) will fit your needs. Secondi's has a well-organized selection of women's designer and casual clothing, accessories, and shoes, and their clothing includes labels such as Donna Karan, Prada, Ann Taylor, and Coach.

North on Connecticut Avenue , a few blocks from the Dupont Metro stop, is the popular men's store Brooks Brothers ( 1201 Connecticut Ave. NW ). Brooks Brothers sells traditional men's clothes, such as wool suits, navy blazers, and a fine line of dress shoes.

Finally, you can find that perfect beaded necklace or the materials to make your own at Beadazzled (1507 Connecticut Ave. NW) Beadazzled sells ready-to-string beads and jewelry as well as books on crafts history and techniques.

Where is there to stay in Dupont Circle ? There are over a dozen hotels you can choose from. To mention a few of them: Hilton Washington Embassy Road , Jurys Washington , Embassy Square , and Washington Terrace.

In short, Washington D.C. has a wealth of one-of-a-kind stores, but you can find the big names (and brands) here as well. It's no fun to carry bags around all day, so if shopping is on your itinerary, renting a hotel in one of these areas will make it easier to drop off your bags.
